Seeking Public Comment on Curriculum that Contains Topics Related to Sex Education

The Educational Opportunity Center Charter High School is currently reviewing Yuma County Health Services Department's curriculum titled, "Be Proud - Be Responsible. The program offers instruction and curriculum on the topics of HIV, AIDs, and Safe Sex. The school and health department have already determined the module titled, Building Condom Use, will not be taught or implemented in any form. The program will not be mandatory and only students and families that agree to participate will be permitted to participate. Please see the link, attached permission slip and surveys to gain better insight into the program. To ensure it aligns with educational standards, community values, and the needs of our students, we believe that community input is essential in shaping a curriculum that is informative, age-appropriate, and culturally responsive.


We invite you to share your thoughts, concerns, and recommendations regarding the curriculum. Your feedback will play a vital role in guiding revisions and ensuring that our educational approach reflects the perspectives of those we serve.

The school will not implement any part of the program until after a decision of our school board is made at the September 10, 2025 board meeting. Mission

At EOC Charter High School we welcome students to a safe, caring and supportive environment; we provide a relevant, high-quality education and prepare our diverse at-risk student body for future endeavors.

Teachers

Teachers will use effective instructional formats and be evaluated continuously throughout the teaching experience. Teachers will develop strong relationships with students by providing a high support environment.

Who We Serve

The high school primarily serves Yuma County students that are between the ages of 16 and 21 seeking to recuperate high school credit at a quicker pace.

Arizona's Parental Rights Handbook

During the 2020 Arizona Legislative Session, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 1061 which went into effect on August 25, 2020. The new statute requires the Arizona Department of Education to establish and post a statutory handbook of parental rights.

Additionally, per statute, each school district and charter school is required to post a link to this parental rights handbook on its website.
