Seeking Public Comment on Curriculum that Contains Topics Related to Sex Education

The Educational Opportunity Center Charter High School is currently reviewing Yuma County Health Services Department's curriculum titled, "Be Proud - Be Responsible. The program offers instruction and curriculum on the topics of HIV, AIDs, and Safe Sex. The school and health department have already determined the module titled, Building Condom Use, will not be taught or implemented in any form. The program will not be mandatory and only students and families that agree to participate will be permitted to participate. Please see the link, attached permission slip and surveys to gain better insight into the program. To ensure it aligns with educational standards, community values, and the needs of our students, we believe that community input is essential in shaping a curriculum that is informative, age-appropriate, and culturally responsive.

We invite you to share your thoughts, concerns, and recommendations regarding the curriculum. Your feedback will play a vital role in guiding revisions and ensuring that our educational approach reflects the perspectives of those we serve.

Mission

At EOC Charter High School we welcome students to a safe, caring and supportive environment; we provide a relevant, high-quality education and prepare our diverse at-risk student body for future endeavors.

Teachers

Teachers will use effective instructional formats and be evaluated continuously throughout the teaching experience. Teachers will develop strong relationships with students by providing a high support environment.

Who We Serve

The high school primarily serves Yuma County students that are between the ages of 16 and 21 seeking to recuperate high school credit at a quicker pace.

Public Notice for the EOC CHS Board Member Mini-Orientation Camp

Welcome to the Honey Bees!!!

On October 9, 2024, students of school successfully lobbied the school board to change our mascot from the Hornet to the Honey Bee. As a symbol of community and hard work, along with the Honey Bee's benefit to humanity, makes the Honey Bee a better macot for our school mission and vision.

School Board Changes to the Student Handbook Related to School Safety

On October 9, 2024 the school board adopted changes to the student handbook that will improve the safety of the school. Area schools have recently been targeted by school threats. The board adopted the five policies in an effort to improve practices related to ensuring all students, staff and visitors can learn and operate in a safe environment. The new policies will go into effect on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

1. No student will be permitted to make a phone call through the use of a cell phone during class hours. Checking the cell phone for missed calls and text messages during class hours will only occur with staff or administrator permission.
2. Students referred to school administration for misconduct or potential violations of school policy will be required to temporarily give cell phones to a school administrator or designated staff person. The student will be offered the use of a school phone to contact parents or guardians either prior to an incident interview or following an incident interview. School staff have the right to establish a time limit for the phone call. Students must politely terminate the call within a short period of time. The school administrator or designee will return the cell phone to either the student, parent, or guardian at the conclusion of the interview or investigation. If the interview or investigation has not concluded at the end of the school day and all discussions with the student, parent, and guardian have concluded for the day; the cell phone will be returned to the student, parent, or guardian.
3. Students will not have access to cell phones during events where school is operating at an awareness level of shelter in place.
4. Students will not be allowed to enter other classrooms without written permission from an administrator or designee.
5. Students will not be allowed to leave a classroom without permission from the staff in charge of the classroom.

Arizona's Parental Rights Handbook

During the 2020 Arizona Legislative Session, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 1061 which went into effect on August 25, 2020. The new statute requires the Arizona Department of Education to establish and post a statutory handbook of parental rights.

Additionally, per statute, each school district and charter school is required to post a link to this parental rights handbook on its website.
